Liquid latex can be oh so much fun to play with. If you have never tried using it it is a very interesting substance. It paints on as a liquid and after several cots have dried you can peel it off in one piece kind of like a balloon.. Yes latex like condoms are made of! I would not recommend it to anyone with very sensitive skin or a latex allergy and it does contain ammonia which cab be irritating to sensitive skin.

 

You can buy liquid latex in a variety of colors from adult novelty and toy stores or on the internet. I learned about it from strip clubs because some clubs require the girls to cover their nipples or breasts with it. Entire costumes or temporary clothing can also be made with the latex with practice although it does take a whole lot of patience.

If you want to give the latex a try I can give you a couple of tips that you really should know about the latex and application process. You will need some triangle shaped cosmetic sponges which are available anywhere makeup is sold, some unscented or lightly scented lotion (apply lotion to skin before application- this will help from the skin drying out and easier removal). The area that you are applying the latex to should be hairless otherwise it will bond to the hair and you will rip the hair out when you take it off! Also DON’T shave and then apply right afterward!! The ammonia in the latex will burn on the freshly shaved area!

You will also need a hair dryer to dry the latex in between coats. Paint on a thin layer of latex with a cosmetic sponge and make it as smooth as possible. Blow dry the area until it is clear with no cloudy areas. The cloudy areas are still wet and should not be touched until dry.. then repeat with a second coat and dry completely. You will need to apply at least four or five coats to complete your project.

It will take some practice to get good at and the latex may be rough or bumpy at first. Don’t worry you can peel it off an start again. When you are finished you will need to dust the latex with some kind of powder. Baby powder works well or I have even seen pressed powder or eye shadow work well. Many eye shadows give a shimmery effect. If you do not add powder to the top of the dried latex it will stick to itself and can tear.

One last word of caution about liquid latex.. be very careful not to get it in your hair or on your carpet, towels or any other fabrics! It will NEVER come out! I had the unfortunate experience one time of it spilling on the front seat of my car! It was awful and left a huge permanent rubber spot on the upholstery. If you get it on your hands you can easily wash it away with soap and water, however; I would try not to get too much into your sink’s drain. Once it hardens it will not dissolve and can cause a clog. Your best bet it to let it dry and then rub it off into the garbage.
